HUNTINGTON — Marshall University officials named its new dean of the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at a 2 p.m. news conference Tuesday at the Erma Ora Byrd Clinical Center.

Dr. Joseph I. Shapiro, currently a professor and chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of Toledo, was selected through a national search that recently was narrowed down to four finalists.

Shapiro is board certified in nephrology and internal medicine, specializing in dialysis, transplantation, hypertension and clinic nephrology.

A practicing doctor for 32 years, Shapiro earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Georgetown University and had a fellowship in nephrology at the University of Colorado.

Medical school students and staff were introduced to Shapiro Tuesday morning during a private meeting.
