Controversy over heart disease risk formula being applied as an indication for statins. PDF Print
USA Today: The guidelines have been a hot topic of discussion this week at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions in Dallas. At the heart of the debate: The formula used to identify the people ages 40 to 75 with at least a 7.5% risk of developing cardiovascular disease over the next decade. The Harvard professors applied the risk formula to several large studies and found it overestimated people's risk of heart attack and stroke. They report their findings in a commentary Tuesday in the medical journal The Lancet.

IBM opens up Watson to developers. Some medical applications underway. PDF Print
Huffpo: Extreme Tech reported earlier this year on Watson's technology being used in the medical field. In response to certain variables a doctor inputs, the computer can scan through medical data to return potential diagnoses. "[Health care company] WellPoint points out that doctors miss early stage lung cancer diagnoses about half the time. Watson, on the other hand, is able to get the right diagnosis on these same cases 90% of the time," Extreme Tech reported.
