So lucky to be saved by a double transplant - Stuff.co.nz PDF Print

Last updated 05:00 01/07/2012

Double organ recipient Robyn Donnelly counts herself "really lucky" for her successful kidney and pancreas transplants.

The former type 1 diabetic was seriously ill and on dialysis at the age of 30 when she received the organs 12 years ago.

"I was throwing up every day from the build-up of toxins in my body, I was feeling really ill," the Auckland resident said. "I didn't have much of an appetite, or any energy. My haemoglobin count was really low.

"I was pretty miserable. Three times a week you dialyse for four hour sessions but afterwards you do feel good because you're getting rid of the toxins."

Donnelly is one of the lucky ones. She was on dialysis for six weeks before she received her life-saving transplants, whereas many are forced to wait years.

"I've been really, really lucky. Part of the reason is because I needed a double organ transplant, so I was higher up the priority list, and I was the best tissue match [for the deceased donor]."

She would like to see more people consider organ donation and make their intentions known.

"So many people need to know that the driver's licence system doesn't work. You need to talk to your next of kin."

Scottish News: Kidney patient chose to die by stopping dialysis treatment - Scottish Daily Record PDF Print
sandra dewar Image 1

A KIDNEY patient who endured two decades of pain chose to die by stopping her treatment.

Care worker Sandra Dewar, 36, could have lived for another 10 years if she continued with dialysis.

But Sandra, who had suffered the agony of a failed transplant and had spent much of the last year in hospital, decided to put an end to her pain.

And she decided not to tell her family and friends of her decision in advance in case they tried to talk her out of it.

Sandra, from Perth, passed away last Friday in hospital, two weeks after stopping the dialysis.

Yesterday, as her funeral was held at Perth Crematorium, her brother William paid tribute to her courage and explained she could not face more years of agony.

William, 31, said: “Sandra could have lived up to another 10 years on the dialysis but would have suffered a great deal.

“Obviously, we were very upset when we found out as we didn’t want to lose her.

“But we all respected her decision and knew we would not be able to change her mind.

“It helps to know she is now at peace and there will be no more needles or operations.

“She battled bravely for a long time and will never be forgotten.”

William described Sandra as a great daughter, sister and aunt who loved fashion, make-up and going out dancing with friends.

He said his parents Jeanette and James, stepfather Freddie and sister Jeanett were still trying to come to terms with their loss.

Sandra was diagnosed with a life-threatening kidney disorder at 13. When she left Perth High, she began work at a care home.

She began dialysis at 19 and had to give up work as her health failed.

In 2008, she had a kidney transplant but her body rejected the new organ.

William added: “She nearly died a number of times after the transplant and was gravely ill but she fought back. She endured so many operations over the years and always kept positive.

“She loved life and was sociable and outgoing. When she was fitter, she enjoyed nothing more than going out dancing with her many friends.

“We are a really close family and spent a lot of time together. She was a great daughter, sister and aunt.

“When I was younger, she was someone I looked up to and I have so much admiration for her.

“Even if she wasn’t my sister, I would admire the person she was and what she dealt with.

“She was extremely courageous. I would not have been able to last as long with that kind of illness.”

William, a father of one, has paid tribute to Sandra by having a tattoo of her name inscribed on his arm.

New dialysis centre of Mahavir Foundation at Kukatpally - The Hindu PDF Print

The 12 new dialysis machines, which have been installed in Kumudinidevi out patient block at Ramdev Rao Hospital, Kukatpally, will be inaugurated on July 1.

The Bhagwan Mahavir Jain Relief Foundations Trust, which is operating 24 dialysis machines at Koti Vaidya Vidhan Parishad Hospital, is adding 12 more dialysis machines at Ramdev Rao Hospital, Kukatpally, for kidney patients needing regular dialysis.

The foundation, which provides dialysis facility at a concessional rate of Rs. 400 for a single session, is also going to add 15 more dialysis machines at Koti Government Hospital in the near future.

So far, since 2009, the foundation has managed to provide 60, 295 dialysis sessions to over 950 kidney patients from various parts of the State.

Inauguration

“Over Rs. 1 crore has been collected from the donors to set up the new dialysis centre at Kukatpally. This facility will help patients from Kukatpally, who need not travel long distances to reach to dialysis centres in the city,” said Ashok Kothari and Dhiraj Lal Kapadia, Foundation trustees at the hospital.

“In addition to cheap dialysis, we have also provided 39,000 erythropoietin and iron injections worth Rs. 3.5 crore to patients.

Rates at private facilities

In private facilities, each session of dialysis will cost anywhere between Rs. 1,200 to Rs. 2,000 for patients. This puts a lot of financial pressure on the families of kidney patients,” said Inderchand Jain, trustee of the foundation while interacting with press persons here on Thursday.

The foundation is also providing cheap dialysis facilities by collaborating with private hospitals in various parts of the capital including Mahavir, Sushruta, Venus, Sunshine, Devishetty, C.C. Shroff and St. Theresa Hospitals.

“The funds collected for the novel scheme are strictly through donations from philanthropists,” the trustee members said.
