"There was slightly less vision gain with as-needed treatment. However, patients seeking the small extra advantage of monthly treatment need to be mindful of the additional burden, risks, and costs of monthly injections. Since as-needed dosing required 10 fewer eye injections over the course of two years and yielded similar visual results, many patients may choose this option."

Synthetic stool a potential treatment for chronic C. dificile infection. PDF Print
EurekAlert: Dr. Petrof and Dr. Allen Vercoe, an anaerobic microbiologist specializing in intestinal bacteria, are working closely to develop such a therapy. The goal behind their synthetic stool project is to offer a single-dose remedy, putting an end to revolving-door hospital visits for patients with recurring symptoms. Currently, they are continuing their research before using it as a new therapy.

High uric acid levels a risk factor for hypertension in teenagers. PDF Print
Hopkins: Analyzing more than 6,000 medical records of children, ages 12 through 17, from a national databank, the scientists say they found that teenagers with abnormally high levels of uric acid in their blood were, on average, twice as likely to have high blood pressure as those with normal levels.

EurekAlert: The study found that "patients with history of renal disease, hypertension and heart disease had significantly higher odds of having abnormal eGFR," said Dr. Yaghmai. That was not the case for patients with diabetes, he said.

EurekAlert: Watson and colleagues determined that for twins sleeping less than seven hours, genetic influences accounted for 70 percent of the differences in BMI, with common environment accounting for just 4 percent and unique environment 26 percent. For twins averaging more than nine hours of sleep, genetic factors were attributed to 32 percent of weight variations, with common environment accounting for 51 percent and unique environment 17 percent.
