Following this, three pediatric transplants were carried out by local surgeons at the Belarus Institution between April to October of the same year. “The success of this collaboration shows the importance of education in advancing kidney care in the developing world. It reveals how a lot can be achieved with just a little training and guidance from the supporting center”, adds SRC Chair Paul Harden.Previous to 2007, there was no prospect for transplants. Patients were sent to Moscow for an expensive operation. Now, the country counts 170 nephrologists, 18 nephrology clinics, 17 nephrology patient center and one transplant center. Since 2006, there has been a 42% growth in hemodialysis capacity while peritoneal dialysis has also increased. |
