... http://www.nature.com/isn/news/soc_announ/fullview.html?content_id=74569 RDRTF team returns from Haiti After a successful two month mission in Port-au-Prince, the ISN Renal Disaster Relief Task Force has now gradually transferred its duties to the local Haitian medical community. One last task before leaving was to instruct local doctors on how to position permanent tunneled central vein catheters. An MD from Martinique, was sent to give training in the first week of March.The need for dialysis to treat patients suffering from acute kidney infection exceptionally decreased over the last weeks of February. However, five new hemodialysis machines were brought in from Martinique to increase the capacity of the unit, as several of the old machines had broken down during the mission. A French technician was also sent to oversee the installation and will remain onsite until 13 March 2010. Overall, the mission was successful in responding to victims of the earthquake that struck the island in January. It also revealed the tremendous collaboration between Médecins Sans Frontières and nephrology societies across Martinique, Guadaloupe, Europe and the United States. |
