Sirtuin activating drug prolongs lifespan in obese mice by 45% |
NY Times: The drug, SRT-1720, protects the mice from the usual diseases of obesity by reducing the amount of fat in the liver and increasing sensitivity to insulin. These and other positive health effects enable the obese mice to live 44 percent longer, on average, than obese mice that did not receive the drug, according to a team of researchers led by Rafael de Cabo, a gerontologist at the National Institute on Aging.

RenalGuard system (IV fluid infusion rate tied to Foley catheter urine output) shows benefits in preventing contrast nephropathy. |
Circulation: Dr. Briguori reported on data from 294 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who underwent elective catheterization procedures for diagnostic imaging. The primary end point for the study used a definition of CIN as a rise in serum creatinine (SCr) of 0.3mg/dl over the patient's baseline reading. The RenalGuard-treated group had a CIN incidence rate 46% lower than the control group using this definition of CIN.

High serum phosphorus may accelerate CKD progression, block effects of ramipril. |
EurekAlert: The researchers studied health information from 331 CKD patients, dividing patients into four groups based on their phosphate levels. Among the major findings: Even though their blood phosphate was still normal or near normal, patients in the two highest phosphate groups progressed more quickly to serious kidney dysfunction or kidney failure than patients with lower phosphate levels. Higher phosphate levels blunted ramipril's benefits.

Vitamin C dissolves Alzheimer plaques in mice. |
EurekAlert: "When we treated brain tissue from mice suffering from Alzheimer's disease with vitamin C, we could see that the toxic protein aggregates were dissolved. Our results show a previously unknown model for how vitamin C affects the amyloid plaques", says Katrin Mani, reader in Molecular Medicine at Lund University.
