New hybrid minimally invasive surgical procedure to treat atrial fibrillation
Washington University: “By applying the energy to make scars from both the inside and outside of the heart, we’re better able to achieve a full-thickness ablation,” says Hersh S. Maniar, MD, assistant professor of surgery at the School of Medicine who performs the new hybrid procedure and the Cox-Maze. “A complete scar that crosses through the full thickness of the heart wall will more permanently block atrial fibrillation signals.”

New genetic risk factors for lupus found in African Americans.
EurekAlert: Researchers from Boston University's Slone Epidemiology Center have found four new genetic variants in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) that confer a higher risk of systemic lupus erythemathosus ("lupus") in African American women. The study, which currently appears on-line in Human Genetics, is believed to be the first to comprehensively assess the association between genetic variants in the MHC region and risk of lupus in African American women.
