ZS Pharma presenting data on it's GI potassium sorbent in patients taking RAAS inhibitors at ASH PDF Print
ZS Pharma: The ZS003 sub-group analysis, which was pre-specified, specifically looked at patients taking renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitor (RAASi) drug therapies, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) and aldosterone blockers. Results demonstrated that both the 5g and 10g doses of ZS-9, administered once daily, controlled potassium at normal levels in these hyperkalemic patients.

Urine fibrinopeptide B can be used to detect venous thromboembolism. PDF Print
EurekAlert: A new study by researchers from California and Canada indicates a simple urine test can indicate the presence of venous thromboembolism, a blood clot that has broken free from its point of origin and which travels through the bloodstream, eventually lodging in a vein. The test evaluates the levels of fibrinopeptide B (FPB), a small peptide that's released when a thrombosis forms and which is removed from the body through urine. The results of the study will be presented at the American Thoracic Society's 2014 International Conference here.

Difficult-to-detect bacteria in urine associated with overactive bladder symptoms. PDF Print
EurekAlert (Loyola): The current study evaluated urine specimens of 90 women with and without OAB using a new technique known as expanded quantitative urine culture (EQUC). EQUC was able to find bacteria that were not identified by the standard urine culture techniques typically used to diagnose urinary tract syndromes. Using EQUC, Hilt and her colleagues discovered that the bladder bacteria in healthy women differ significantly from those in women affected by OAB, suggesting that certain bladder bacteria may play a role in OAB.

Auto and bus windshield washer fluid found to be a source of Legionnaire's disease. PDF Print
EurekAlert: A form of bacteria responsible for respiratory illness, including the deadly pneumonia known as Legionnaire's disease, may be able to grow in windshield washer fluid and was isolated from nearly 75% of school buses tested in one district in Arizona, according to research presented today at the annual meeting of the American Society for Microbiology. "Washer fluid spray can release potentially dangerous numbers of these bacteria into the air. These results suggest that automobiles may serve as a source of transmission for Legionella infections," says Otto Schwake, a doctoral student at Arizona State University, who presented the research.

Benzodiazepine use for sleep markedly increase adverse events n heart failure patients. PDF Print
EurekAlert: ... He (Dr. Steoguchi) added: "Benzodiazepine hyptonics may have cardiodepressant actions. They may also exert respiratory depressant actions which could exacerbate sleep disordered breathing and lead to a worse prognosis." Dr Setoguchi concluded: "Our results need confirmation in larger, prospective studies before heart failure patients can be advised to stop taking sleeping pills. But HFpEF patients who use sleeping pills, particularly those who have sleep disordered breathing, should be carefully monitored."
