EurekAlert: "About one-third of all people are persistent S. aureus carriers, another third are occasional carriers and a remaining third don't seem to carry S. aureus at all," said David Relman, MD, the Thomas C. and Joan M. Merigan Professor and a professor of medicine and of microbiology and immunology. Relman, who is also chief of the infectious disease section at Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System, was the study's senior author. The lead author was Miling Yan, PhD, a graduate student in Relman's lab at the time the experiments were performed.

Long-term use of proton-pump inhibitors linked to vitamin B12 deficiency. PDF Print
EurekAlert: "Patients who took PPI medications for more than two years had a 65 percent increase in their risk of B12 deficiency," said Douglas A. Corley, MD, PhD, a gastroenterologist and research scientist with the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research. "Higher doses also were associated with an increased risk, compared with lower doses. Kaiser Permanente's electronic health records allowed us to look at what happens in the real world for these commonly used medications."

FDA removes certain restrictions from Avandia. PDF Print
FDA: Results from the Rosiglitazone Evaluated for Cardiovascular Outcomes and Regulation of Glycemia in Diabetes (RECORD) clinical trial showed no elevated risk of heart attack or death in patients being treated with Avandia when compared to standard-of-care diabetes drugs. These data do not confirm the signal of increased risk of heart attacks that was found in a meta-analysis of clinical trials first reported in 2007.
